Easter at Murchison Falls

My brother, David, and his wife, Susan, braved hours of travel to come make sure we are surviving in Uganda. It’s their first trip to Africa and we have loved seeing their reaction to everyday Kampala life.

They both were anticipating the harrowing adventure of driving with Scott in his Defender.

They have marveled at the number of people walking everywhere. Especially out in the smaller villages as we drove past families dressed in their Sunday best, carrying crosses along the road for Good Friday.

They have laughed at the things people carry on their bodas (motorcycles).

They have taken countless hours of video of the roads, the driving and the people.

They have met some of our Young Life friends and tomorrow they will go visit a prison and see a bit of what Scott’s doing with Pepperdine.

They have met many of our friends from church, our couple’s group and Scott’s golf guys.

Last weekend, we drove six hours north of Kampala to visit Murchison Falls for Easter weekend. We went on an early morning safari drive, an afternoon boat cruise on the Nile and hiked to the top of the waterfall. We saw giraffes, elephants, hippos, five different antelopes, lions and more small animals than we could count.

During the trip, we were ONLY stopped by the police 5 times. David was in awe of Scott’s ability to “reason” with the officers as he repeatedly asked for forgiveness for whatever unpardonable sin he was accused of committing. They were gracious every time (after a bit of pleading) because it was Easter weekend and a time for mercy.

Another act of Easter grace - Scott realized the Defender was leaking “something” while we were in the National Park on Sunday morning. We were easily 90 minutes from a town where we might get it fixed. Scott was stressed but pressed on. We turned off the last park road and drove right into an empty service bay at the local Shell station. Two mechanics were on duty. There was a hole in something leaking transmission fluid. Fifteen minutes later, it was fixed. It was Easter – no charge. Scott offered them each the equivalent of $8.00. They were thrilled. So were we.

Back on the road to Kampala.

It was a wonderful way to spend the weekend and we still have 10 more days together.
