A Station Tour

We were able to sneak back to the U.S. for a bit of time.

I spent a week in Vancouver, WA with my folks while my mom had hip replacement surgery. We also visited Pepperdine for a week at the law school, planning, praying and celebrating what God is doing in East Africa. (We especially loved visiting students who we have met over the past three years.)

We are grateful that Maggie and Bingo welcomed us back to our Seattle home base for a few days between jaunts. They have acclimated well back to the PNW and Maggie is really liking her new job. Not surprisingly, she does miss being in her own home but we are thankful that she is taking care of our home and we can come and go with relative ease. (Fortunately, Maggie’s kept her Michigan house and has good tenants for the foreseeable future)

Truly a highlight of this trip was our time in Memphis with Anna. We found a small Airbnb just down the street from her apartment and the hot summer weather/humidity broke right before we arrived. This was Scott’s first time catching a glimpse of Anna’s new life.

She invited us to visit her at her new job. It is a bit weird visiting your adult daughter’s work but we were totally welcomed by the tremendous team of people at the Memphis NBC affiliate station. Scott brought donuts (it’s the 3:00 am – noon crew) so that helped break the ice.

Anna’s loving the newsroom. She produces the mid-day news. She’s learned so much and has exceptional colleagues at the helm. We kept reminding her that it is really unusual to have so many gifted people pouring into her professionally. She’s well aware and honing some pretty technical skills. Scott and I sat next to her for a couple of the actual shows. We both marveled at what a perfect fit this is for her skill set and her desire to tell stories and capture the heart of a community.

While Anna worked or slept (she’s in bed by 6:00 pm) we did some little “dad” projects at her apartment, explored (shockingly loved visiting Graceland), ate a lot of BBQ and walked. From Anna’s place, it’s just steps to the Mississippi River and a newly renovated riverfront park. Our daily ritual was a refreshing 5-mile round trip walk down along the river, across a pedestrian bridge, to Arkansas and back.

There’s still so much to see and do – history, music, great food and of course – Anna! We can hardly wait to go back.

Scott’s already back in Uganda. Actually, this week he’s in Rwanda and I head back next week after a long-awaited trip to Canada to see some old friends.
